At 61, Bill T. of Oakdale has gone through a remarkable health transformation, and the Sewickley Valley YMCA played a big part in his journey. We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Bill about how the YMCA supported him as he worked toward his weight loss goals and prepared for hip replacement surgery. Here’s how he turned his health around, thanks to determination, resilience, and the support of the YMCA community.
Bill, you’ve accomplished so much with your health. Can you tell us about what led you to the YMCA?
Sure! I needed to lose weight to get doctor approval for hip replacement surgery. In August 2023, I joined the Y with a goal in mind: prepare my body for surgery. But it turned into something more than that. The Y quickly became a habit for me, and I wasn’t just working out to get surgery; the Y became a supportive community.
That’s incredible. So it wasn’t just about preparing for the surgery anymore?
Exactly. I came in to prepare my body for surgery, but the people at the Y kept me going. I felt supported every time I walked through the doors. The smiles on the faces of the staff and other members really helped push me forward. It wasn’t just about my hips anymore; it was about taking control of my overall health and sticking with it.
What milestones did you achieve on your journey?
In March, I hit my weight loss goal with a BMI below 40, which allowed me to get the first hip replacement. After that, I stayed dedicated, kept coming to the Y, and prepared for my second hip surgery. Now, with two new hips, I feel like a completely different person. I’ve got a spring in my step, and it’s all thanks to the work I put in at the Y and the encouragement I received along the way.
It sounds like the Y has become a big part of your routine.
Absolutely, It’s become a habit. I reached this point because of the smiles on your faces every time I come to the Y. Your support has been a very important part of my journey. I’m very thankful for the Y community!
