Introducing the YMCA Member Spotlight Series
Welcome to our new Member Spotlight series, where we celebrate the incredible individuals who make the Sewickley YMCA a special place. Through their unique stories, we aim to inspire and connect our community, highlighting the transformative power of compassion, service, and a shared commitment to wellness. Our first spotlight shines on MJ Crane, a dedicated volunteer and advocate whose journey with the YMCA has helped build bridges, strengthen connections, and create ripples of positive change in Sewickley.
A New Beginning: Finding Belonging at the Y
When MJ Crane moved to Sewickley in 2005, she left behind the familiar comforts of Columbus, Ohio, embarking on an exciting yet daunting chapter of her life with her husband and two young sons. “We knew little about the community,” MJ recalls, “but we were eager to build a sense of belonging.” That sense of connection came into focus in 2006 when the Sewickley YMCA became a central part of their lives.
For MJ, the Y was more than a place to exercise; it was a pathway into the community. Volleyball, a sport she’s loved since childhood, became her gateway to connection. “I attended an open gym session not knowing a soul,” she shares. “Those games introduced me to people who became lifelong friends and teammates.”
Building Community Through Sports: Friendship, Fitness, and Connection
Through volleyball, MJ not only rekindled her love for the sport but also formed lasting relationships. She’s been part of the same local team for nearly 20 years, a testament to the community’s welcoming spirit. “That first experience at the Y reminded me that community isn’t built overnight,” MJ says. “It’s formed through shared experiences and mutual interests.”
The YMCA also became a hub for MJ’s family. From her younger son Charlie’s summers at YMCA summer camps to her older son Spencer’s regular visits, the Y provided a space for everyone to grow, connect, and thrive.
From Sewickley Valley YMCA Member to YMCA Volunteer: Spreading Holiday Joy
MJ’s relationship with the YMCA deepened as she transitioned from member to active volunteer. It started with a simple offer to help with the Angel Tree program, a holiday initiative providing gifts to families in need.
“At first, my role was small,” MJ explains, “but I quickly saw how much more could be done.” Her suggestions—like adding festive touches, inviting choirs to perform, and using holiday-themed totes—transformed the event into a joyful experience. “These small touches created a warm, welcoming atmosphere that families looked forward to every year,” she says.
Fighting Food Insecurity: Small Acts with Big Impact
Another cause close to MJ’s heart is food insecurity. She manages one of Sewickley’s mini pantries, addressing the hidden reality that many families in the area struggle to make ends meet. “Food insecurity extends beyond meals,” MJ notes. “It’s about dignity and access to basic necessities.” Her work ensures the pantries provide high-demand items like hygiene products, snacks, and feminine care supplies—a lifeline for many in the community.
Parenting, Growth, and Resilience: Lessons from Life
MJ’s dedication to service is deeply rooted in her personal experiences. Raising a son with autism profoundly shaped her perspective. “Stepping away from my marketing career to focus on Spencer was challenging,” MJ reflects, “but it allowed me to be present during a critical time.” Today, Spencer thrives as a Quaker Valley High School graduate working with the support of a job coach.
MJ’s journey inspired her to create inclusive opportunities at the Y, including puzzle days and events for individuals with disabilities. “Social connections are vital for everyone,” she says. “It’s rewarding to see these events bring people together.”
A Life of Balance: Staying Active, Connected, and Creative
Beyond her volunteer work, MJ embraces roles and hobbies that enrich her life. From working part-time as a restaurant server to singing in a band, she finds joy in staying active and creative. “The YMCA remains a constant,” MJ says. “Whether I’m working out, volunteering, or attending events, it’s a place where ideas are welcomed, and solutions are found collaboratively.”
Why the Y Matters: MJ’s Vision for a Stronger Community
Looking ahead, MJ is committed to supporting her family, staying healthy, and giving back to the community. “The Y is more than a gym,” she emphasizes. “It’s where people come together to uplift one another.” Through programs like the Angel Tree initiative, mini-pantries, and other YMCA special events, MJ has shown how small actions can create lasting ripples of positive change. Her journey reminds us of the power of showing up and working together.
