From Camper to Educator: How the YMCA Shaped Bret’s Life

The Sewickley Valley YMCA has been a pivotal part of many lives over the years, including Bret P., a 38-year-old former camper and counselor, now an Assistant Principal at City High in Pittsburgh. Bret’s journey with the Y started three decades ago, and it’s a story that perfectly reflects the power of belonging and opportunity. Here’s how the YMCA helped shape his path.

A Life-Changing Opportunity: How a Scholarship Led Bret to the Y

Bret first stepped into the YMCA at age 8, thanks to a summer camp scholarship. Growing up in a neighborhood where opportunities weren’t always guaranteed, this chance to attend camp opened up a world of possibilities for him.

“I came from a background where my school or neighborhood didn’t always offer the best opportunities, but camp was different. The YMCA was where I started figuring out who I was and what I wanted to be,” Bret shared.

Finding a Sense of Belonging and Purpose

From his first day at the Sewickley Valley YMCA, Bret felt a connection. He didn’t just have fun at camp—it became a place where he started to understand himself and his future. The camp experience was a turning point, helping Bret realize he belonged and could dream of a bigger future.

“Camp wasn’t just fun; it was where I grew up, which we usually think of as our neighborhoods or schools. But for me, I grew up here at the YMCA,” Bret explained. The sense of community and belonging gave him the confidence to discover his potential.

Giving Back: From Camper to Counselor to Educator

As Bret grew, so did his commitment to the YMCA. He returned as a camp counselor, eager to create life-changing experiences for other children. His time as a counselor led to a discovery—his passion for education. He wanted to ensure that children experienced the same joy, growth, and sense of purpose that the Y had given him.

Now, as an Assistant Principal, Bret’s connection to the Y remains strong. Every summer, he takes a few days off from teaching to volunteer at the YMCA camp, which helped shape his life.

A Mentor’s Perspective: Marc Smith on Bret’s Growth

Marc Smith, the Sewickley Valley YMCA Camp Director, has watched Bret’s journey unfold over the years. “I’ve known Bret since he was 8 years old in our tennis camps. I couldn’t be more proud or honored to see him grow into the successful educator and devoted husband he has become,” said Smith. “It has been a privilege to be part of his journey and witness his growth into the remarkable man he is today.”
